Role Summary

The Director Fleet Engineering sets the long-term strategy and oversees the performance of the Fleet Engineering group at Alaska. As a people leader, this role establishes strategic goals and direction for a team of leaders to support Alaska’s fleet.

Key Duties

  • Provides technical authority to modify aircraft configurations, maintenance programs, and associated Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICAs).

  • Directs and ensures safe, compliant aircraft and reliable operations while maintaining competitive costs.

  • Ensures all regulatory required actions are implemented to ensure compliance.

  • Serves as an advisory member on the Reliability Control Board and as a member of the Reliability Working Group.

  • Maintain compliance with SMS and Company safety policies and procedures as well as Federal Regulations by reporting any safety hazard or potential hazards.

  • Monitors and analyzes daily operations and drives reviews, analysis, and incorporation of service documents (SB, SL, etc.) to provide tangible operational or cost benefits.

  • Manages and improves cost of engineering operations to provide desired results at optimal cost.

  • Partners with Maintenance, Flight Operations, Inflight, equipment manufacturers, and other stakeholders to facilitate beneficial process and procedure changes.

  • Communicates and partners with internal customers to identify and drive cost savings and operational improvement opportunities.

  • Manages teams of avionics, structures, interiors, powerplant, systems engineers, and other technical staff to ensure the achievement of quality, timeliness, and effectiveness to support aircraft configuration and maintenance requirements (e.g., reliability, publications, planning, etc.)..

  • Is responsible for quality and implementation of relevant General Procedures Manual (GPM) processes and procedures.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required

Required

  • 8 years of experience in airline engineering (relevant discipline/function).

  • 5 years of leadership experience, with at least 2 of those years directly leading people.

  • Bachelor’s degree (optional: with a focus in engineering), or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.

  • Strong working knowledge of aircraft systems and Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) relating to engineering and maintenance activities.

  • Experience with all relevant regulatory requirements and industry practices.

  • Expertise in airline technical operations and conversant in each of the technical disciplines: avionics, structures, interiors, powerplant, and systems.

  • Excellent communication skills: verbal (both informal working teams and formal executive presentations), and in clear/concise written documents.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to create collaborative relationships that drive outcomes in the best interest of the company with others in the organization and key external business partners.

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • 5 years of technical leadership experience at a manager-level or above.

  • Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement training and certifications.

  • Expert proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, and Outlook.)

  • Demonstrated leadership skills in a technical operations and knowledge of line, base, and component maintenance practices.

  • A Master of Science degree in engineering or aMaster of Business Administration degree.

  • Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics Certificate
