Role Specific Details

This position will be in office.

Role Summary

The Manager, External Reporting and Technical Accounting is responsible for executing on the strategy for external reporting and technical accounting activities for Alaska Air Group (AAG). As a people leader, the Manager, External Reporting and Technical Accounting leads and establishes priorities for the technical accounting team, as well as extensive contact with other members of the Controllership, Treasury, Tax, FP&A, senior management and the internal and external auditors.

Key Duties

  • Takes a lead role in oversight and preparation of SEC filings (Form 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, etc.)

  • Proactively identifies, researches and interprets new reporting requirements, takes lead role in compiling first draft of new disclosures, and provides upward communication on the anticipated impacts to Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air financial statements and disclosures.

  • Supervises/coordinates information gathering from across the organization, including owning the quarterly reporting calendar, distributing requests for information, and reviewing schedules prepared for external reporting purposes.

  • Compiles quarterly statement of cash flows, and reviews monthly summary cash flow preparation

  • Executes iXBRL tagging process, including identification of new tagging requirements and coordination with outside sourcing to complete all necessary tagging.

  • Partners closely with Investor Relations and Legal to draft, circulate, and file ad-hoc 8-Ks.

  • Manages the review cycle for all SEC filings, including internal reviews with management and the disclosure committee, as well as reviews with external auditors.

  • Forges strong relationships and communicates / consults with a range of stakeholders including senior finance leaders, Treasury, Investor Relations, Corporate Communications, Tax, Mileage Plan, and IT system engineering, to define and achieve objectives.

  • Prepares technical memorandums outlining the company’s accounting policies and positions.

  • Takes a lead role in the implementation of new accounting pronouncements including developing implementation project plans and liaising with impacted groups.

  • Takes a lead role in identifying, evaluating and documenting critical accounting conclusions, including new standard implementation, contract reviews, and other business-critical decisions.

  • Oversees the annual Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) risk assessment and control scoping exercise.

  • Partners with IT SOX counterpart to ensure optimization/rationalization of operational and financial controls.

  • Partners with Internal Audit to understand and address control deficiencies identified through the annual testing process, and assists with process improvement initiatives.

  • Acts as key point of contact for the business to answer questions and resolve concerns raised throughout the annual SOX process.

  • Participates in monthly accounting close process, including review of account reconciliations and accounting for annual performance-based bonus.

  • Manages, develops and encourages Financial Accounting and Reporting staff.

  • Models and encourages open, honest, and direct communications.

Required

  • 5 years of accounting experience with large public clients and SEC reporting exposurce, preferably including Big 4 experience

  • 2 years of leadership

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.

  • Strong accounting research skills and a demonstrated ability to apply technical accounting guidance is required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills are required.

  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills are required.

  • Attention to detail, and an ability to concisely document financial analysis is required.

  • Ability to work with all employee levels, from staff to executive level management, is required.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (e.g. Excel, Word) is required, Workiva experience is a plus.

  • A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Minimum age of 18

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
