Role Summary

This role is responsible for balancing strategic priorities while ensuring tactical execution for Database Platforms for Alaska Airgroup. As a people leader, the Senior Manager, Database Platforms leads and establishes priorities for the team to provide stable, secure and performant database platforms for both on-prem and cloud resources.

Key Duties

  • Leads a highly technical team responsible for ensuring the integrity, availability and security of multiple database, middleware and cloud infrastructure disciplines, requiring specialized infrastructure administration support.

  • Ensures database platforms meet/exceed critical systems disaster recovery objectives.

  • Collaborates and influences other IT teams to improve systems support, monitoring, and administration.

  • Ensures robust capacity planning and life cycle management processes are developed and executed by the team.

  • Lead and/or influence cross divisional enterprise infrastructure projects related to database platforms

  • Define the long-term strategy for database platforms and their implementation.

  • Manages vendor relationships, ensuring highest quality and reasonable costs.

  • Writes business cases to gain Senior leadership support

  • Develops people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on delegation for stretch assignments, growing and developing the team for capacity and growth, looking at performance across the team, and time management.

Required

Required

  • 7 years of experience in database platforms.

  • 4 years of leadership experience, with at least some of this experience directly leading people.

  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in a technical discipline, or an additional two years of relevant training/ experience in lieu of this degree

  • In-depth knowledge of the following:

  • Datacenter server operating systems Windows, UNIX, and Linux

  • Database platforms Oracle, MS SQL Server, Informix, MongoDB, and PostGreSQL

  • Cloud Database platforms including Azure Cosmos, SQL, and Synapse

  • Enterprise Messaging Platforms (IBM MQ)

  • Database replication and backup/restore techniques.

  • Leveraging new technologies to improve process, reduce support, and/or lower costs.

  • Designing and implementing enterprise systems utilizing such platforms as Windows Server, UNIX, Linux, Virtualization, Cloud, Active Directory, etc.

  • Utilizing scripting tools i.e. Shell, VBScript, JavaScript, and PowerShell.

  • Implementing projects involving enterprise hardware and/or software technology integrations.

  • Knowledge of networking concepts (e.g., advanced networking, switching, and routing) and backup technologies and policy management.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and customer service skills.

  • Proven team building, coaching and mentoring skills.

  • Proficient project planning, risk management, scheduling, and execution, with a proven ability to work effectively in stressful work environment.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • Professional certification in an applicable technology, project management, or process improvement.
