Alaska Airlines Manager User Experience in Seattle, Washington

Role Summary

We're seeking a creative design leader to help drive the future of Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air employee tools. You'll lead a team of UI/UX designers and work across several product teams, and other functions in the design and delivery of high-performing user experiences for employee mobile tools, websites and more.

Your leadership guides the design of complex experiences from concept to execution, resulting in high-quality visual and interactive elements that bring our Alaska brand to life for our employees. You see things as experiences, not apps and embody Lean UX thinking, accountability, collaboration and employee advocacy.

Scope & Complexity

This people manager position manages user experience activities for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, executes on the product strategy and shapes the culture of the team.

Key Duties

  • Advocates for users, imparting day-to-day, strategic design leadership that fosters a shared understanding of the user-centric intersection between design, technology, content, and business goals.

  • Serves as a mentor and hands-on designer for team of user experience and creative designers. Facilitates ideation sessions to push the boundaries of design

  • Promotes a high-performance culture by cultivating and motivating direct/indirect reports through coaching, mentoring, and by providing regular and meaningful feedback.

  • Sets a high bar and helps the team with efficient delivery of quality designs; creating and inspiring a design-driven culture

  • Evangelizes user-centered design and delivers consistency within and across devices and environments

  • Leads the UX research to identify design opportunities, identify best practices, evaluate concepts, incorporate findings, and encourages continuous innovation

  • Collaborates with designers across the company on creating, contributing and curating a style guide and pattern library

  • Collaborates with eCommerce and marketing teams to align designs with brand and/or campaign guidelines and informs brand guidelines based on digital best practices

  • Collaborates with product management to inform product strategy and road map, focusing on user experiences

  • Hires, develops, and coaches designers to take Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air employee tools to the next level, while building strong working relationships with product manager and software engineering

  • Selects, negotiates, and manages service provider relationships and contracts

  • Manages all aspects of end-to-end interaction design delivery consistent with Alaska's design ethos

  • Prepares, organizes, and complete design project tasks of various scopes and complexity effectively and efficiently while managing priorities, deadlines, and deliverables in a fast-paced environment

Job-Specific Skills & Education


  • A minimum of 5 years of interactive/digital design, information architecture, or visual design experience

  • A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree, with a focus in computer science, graphic design, human factors-related field or a related discipline

  • An equivalent combination of training, experience, and education will be considered in lieu of required experience and/or degree

  • 3 years of experience leading and mentoring direct reports

  • Experience working with vendors or service providers

  • Proven experience designing, architecting, and optimizing websites and/or applications

  • Excellent conceptual skills, with the ability to easily move from thinking big picture strategy to driving feature level design

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team of direct reports

  • Ability to analyze quantitatively, problem solve, and deliver initiatives from conception to completion

  • Effective communication skills (e.g., verbal, written, and, interpersonal) and the ability communicate with all levels of the organization

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum age of 18

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S


  • 3 years of experience with an agile development environment and methodologies

  • Experience with Lean UX models and agile workflows

  • Advanced experience with fundamental user-centered design, usability, and interaction design principles

  • Advanced proficiency with industry tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Visio, Axure, HTML/XHTML/CSS, front-end coding, and scripting languages

  • Advanced concepting and wireframe skills
